Access the links below and start getting to grips with some of the topics and areas covered in the A Level English Language course. No need to hand anything in/upload to me. These activities are just to give you a taster of what to expect. Topics covered are:
Linguistic analysis of authentic texts. You will look at language under the microscope.
Original writing for a real-world purpose on a topical language issue.
Analysis of how children acquire language. You will learn how babies and toddlers learn to speak.
Language in the media. You will learn about bias and how the media influences readers.
How language changes over time. You will learn about how language evolves and changes.
An investigation into an area of each learner’s particular individual interest. This is a 2000-2500 word independent research project and you will also include an academic poster to support your project.
In preparation for this course, start reading a variety of newspaper articles, magazine articles, reports etc. Read about the following topics and make bullet point notes/research: Language and gender, language and sexism, language and power. We have added a couple of youtube videos on these topics for you to watch.
With the current situation as it stands with regards to the Coronavirus pandemic, you should be able to research a whole range of ideas from different perspectives and written in various styles for particular audiences and purposes. Try to collate a range of this material for discussion in September. You may choose to investigate this further as your individual project for the NEA coursework.
Just enjoy finding out about the English language and its origins. See you in September!
